The Dulux Colour Awards 2022 Residential Interior category recognises the best interior paint finishes of any building used as a private residence including single and multi-residential. Category winner: Lachlan Seegers Architect for Erskineville House, Sydney. Photographer: Rory Gardiner.
The beautiful greens and greys of a spotted gum tree towering over this terrace house was the inspirational source of colour for Lachlan Seegers Architect's design. Cabinetry in greens is similar to the gum leaves, light yellow gives a sunny feeling, steel threshold onto the courtyard in natural grey to compliment the hues of the trunk and bathrooms were tiled and painted blue to create the atmosphere of being under water. Dulux products Wash&Wear®, Ceiling White and Ceiling White +PLUS Kitchen&Bathroom were used throughout the interior.
“Centred around a spotted gum, Erskineville House deftly fulfils the architect’s aim ‘to bind the home’s atmosphere with the everchanging presence of nature’. In an elegant, unforced manner, a soft palette of pale yellow, warm grey and hues of green supports the narrative and moderates the atmosphere of the interiors. The result is a subdued, cocooning moodiness that gently changes and evolves with the movement of natural light. We commend the architect’s commitment to the vision in what appears to be a simple response but is, in fact, a highly considered and finely wrought design.”
There was no need to look far for inspiration to create the perfect palette for this Sydney home, which celebrates nature with the soothing gum tree colours.
“Tasked with creating a new extension to a Victorian original with an '80s addition, the architects have struck a fine balance between cohesion and distinction, largely orchestrated by their colour selection. The disparate built elements have a cohesive yet subtly distinct palette for each period: neutrals in the period rooms, playful greens and natural materials in the first extension, and warm pinks with earthy hues that reflect the seasonally changing landscape in the contemporary addition. Bathrooms of sea blue and mint green are calming stand-alone sanctuaries. Extending the respective palettes to joinery and furniture throughout, the varied tones, textures and touchpoints combine to create an immersive, sensory experience.”
“It’s unwavering commitment to colour sets this practice’s strategy apart. Redefining the potential of a small-scale renovation, Pac Studio has ambitiously designed a scheme to do much more than unite or revitalise an existing home; it has investigated the potential for colour to delineate space, affect mood and define identity. Despite the project’s modest scope, the result is transformative and highly effective – a credit to the architects’ vision and resolve.”
