Backyard painting projects
Paint the kennel. Paint the fence. Fix up those old benches. These are some of the jobs we’ve all been putting off throughout the winter. Now’s the time to get it all done, and make your backyard an all-time classic.
Upgrading your dog kennel
Dog Kennel Step-by-step
Cut in
Cut in around the edges of the wall with a brush — these are the areas the roller cannot easily reach. Maintain a wet-edge by cutting in larger areas in sections as you go. This will help to avoid ‘picture framing’ where unblended cut in areas remain obvious after rolling.
Applying paint
Apply paint to the surface using short, horizontal brush strokes.
Smooth over
Smooth over the painted section with long brush strokes. Do not reload the brush when you do this. Don’t brush it too much – a few strokes should be enough to smooth the surface.
Repeat
Repeat this process for the second coat. Allow to dry, then give the surface a light sand with 400 grit sandpaper and repeat for a second coat.
Decide on the number of coats
If painting bare timber a third coat will be required
Painting your fence
Paint your fence step-by-step
Before painting
Before you paint your fence, tie back and cover your plants, remove any bikes or cars, brush away any dirt and lay down a drop sheet.
Use a wire brush
To ensure you achieve the best results possible, use a wire brush to remove imperfections on older fences and an anti-moss solution to combat mould.
Apply Dulux Timbacryl®
Apply Dulux Timbacryl® by brush, roller or spray. Handheld paint sprayers can be a convenient and time saving approach, depending on the style and size of the fence.
Sprucing up your bench seat

Prepare surface
Prepare the surface by applying 1 coat of Dulux 1Step® Prep Water Based.
Cutting in
Start by cutting in around the edges of your furniture piece.
Apply the paint
Apply Dulux Aquanamel® to the surface using short, horizontal brush strokes.
Smooth over
Once you’ve completed an area, while paint is still wet, lightly smooth over the painted section with long brush strokes. Do not reload the brush when you do this, a few strokes should be enough to smooth the surface.
Lightly sand
Allow 2 hours to dry, then give the surface a light sand with 400 grit sandpaper.
Repeat
Once the first coat is dry, repeat the total process again with a second coat.
