A darker colour can have a big effect on a room adding personality and depth.
Cooler dark colours can recede and make a space feel larger. Warmer dark colours can create a cosy mood.
I like to add moody, immersive colour to rooms that already lack light, this plays on the existing mood making it a feature rather than something undesirable. Darker colour tends to work best in closed rooms rather than open plan.
If adding a darker colour to an open plan, consider where it will be applied to make the most of the feature - use it to highlight architectural features or a wall of art.
Darker hues are often associated with decadent interiors - so luxurious fabrics such as velvet and silk work well to add to this mood but most textures and materials work with dark colours.
Sometimes just a dark wall as a backdrop for art or to help minimise the impact of your wall-mounted television is all that’s needed in a room for that balance of light and dark.
Deeper colour works so well as a focal point in a room, it doesn't have to be immersive.
