Yellow is good for a lethargic dog. Introduce yellow elements to help a dog become more energetic and happier, highlighting yellow's association with fun and stimulation.
Older dogs or dogs recovering from sickness can often feel lethargic. Even the most cared for and pampered dog could benefit from uplifting yellow.
Yellow is often considered the brightest and most energising of the warm colours. It's associated with optimism, energy and sunshine. Softer yellows could help provide a sense of comfort and warmth to a dog, while brighter yellows might be more invigorating.
Lethargy or low activity levels and withdrawing from social stimulation can occur in dogs recovering from both physical health issues or psychological issues due to major life changes such as the loss of a companion or moving to a new environment. In some cases, this can be the equivalent of dog depression.
“Together with behavioural and sometimes veterinary based therapies, colour therapy using yellow could help stimulate the dog and bring them out of themselves. It is good to bring all tools into play to benefit the healing dog”.
Randy was a 15-year-old male dog with stage three cancer who stayed at Pet Refuge while his family escaped violence. To help keep them connected, his family ensured he came with his favourite yellow stuffed toy so he could have a slice of home while at the shelter. Randy wasn’t interested in play or enrichment activities when he first arrived. He just wanted his family and to be home with them.
When it came to taking Randy out of his kennel for toileting or a stroll it was hard to get this elderly gentleman going! But his favourite yellow toy provided him with comfort and seemed to work its magic and he would often play with staff and engage in a ‘tug-of-war ’battle whenever.
Soon, tug-of-war battles turned into more extended play and training as Randy began to trust the team. Randy will be thrilled to return home, but in the meantime stimulation at the shelter will help him heal.
