When a stressed dog enters a play area with green accents, they can become calm and balanced, showcasing green's ability to reduce stress and create a serene environment.
It's easy to understand why a dog may be experiencing stress, but it is important to note that it actually takes dogs much less than their human companions to feel stressed. Stress manifests when a dog’s adrenalin levels (sympathetic arousal) stay too high for too long. There is a huge scale -from a dog living in an exceptionally stressful environment (as is the case in abusive homes), to a dog that’s experiencing separation distress when apart from their owner, right down to a dog that just becomes a wee bit stressed with loud noises or new people in the home.
“Alongside training work to improve the dog's emotional resilience, colour therapy may also be used to help induce a calm state for the dog (parasympathetic arousal) -green is a very calming, balancing colour”.
It is very useful to focus on maintaining this calm state in every dog as much as possible to promote learning and stability, so green is a nice choice in any dog’s space. With it’s close association to nature, green is known to help alleviate nervousness and stress and provide a sense of harmony to a space.
Milo’s family had a matter of days to escape their home with the perpetrator due to be released from custody with only a days’ notice. There was a lot of emotion and tension when our Caseworkers picked up Milo to take him to safety, with children crying and the NZ Police helping the family to leave their home.
Milo was exceptionally stressed, not really understanding what was happening and why the only home he had ever known was being packed up and he was being taken away from his family. When Milo arrived at the Pet Refuge shelter our team helped Milo to destress and provided him with a calm environment so he could decompress and settle into his new temporary home and routines.
Milo settled in quickly, which allowed the Pet Refuge team to administer vet checks and treatment and provide crucial training and enrichment to help Milo heal.
