Adding red accents or accessories to a space, may help to liven up a tired dog, demonstrating red's energising effects.
“Take care not to overdo the colour red in severe cases, as this colour may be too overstimulating for some dogs, particularly if their resilience is low”.
Although Pet Refuge doesn’t often see tired dogs in their shelter, pets like Poppy who are shy, quiet and insular would benefit from the colour red.
Poppy was often nervous and shy in her kennel, isolating herself to the back walls and not reacting to staff trying to encourage her into play or indoor enrichment activities. But as soon as she went outside for her daily walk or a zoomies in the outdoor yard, they would see her true lively self.
Encouraging her with the things she loved the most like tennis balls and toys gave her a lot of energy and she would transform from the shy, insular dog who came into our care. Our shelter team worked on increasing her bond with staff and involvement in enrichment activities to bring her out of her shell to keep her upbeat, particularly on rainy days when she could not go outside.
Please note the team hasn’t experienced a tired dog but believes a pet like *Poppy could have benefited from ‘reds’ as a shy, quiet, insular dog.
*Name changed for safety reasons
