Located in Ahaura River and Lake Brunner catchments area in the West Coast region, Top Crooked Hut is an unmodified NZFS S81 four-bunk design with an open fire. It is believed to have been built by Don Cowlin, the Ranger at Ahaura between 1963 and 1965.
In February 2018 volunteers Paul Reid, Peter Reid, Andrew Buglass and Joe De Rijke flew in to paint Top Crooked Hut. The project was supported by the Back Country Trust/High-Country Consortium, FMC and Alan Rosanowski from Airwest Helicopters.
