Red Hut is located in Ruataniwha Conservation Park and was built originally in 1916 by Rodolph Wigley as part of a tourism venture for the Government Tourist Department.
Red Hut was designed as a stop along the way for commercial guides taking people from Lake Ohau over Barron Saddle to the Hermitage Hotel in Mount Cook Village. This did not prove to be as successful as some would have hoped, so the hut was mainly used for mustering.
Back in 2003 the historic hut was fully restored to a representative of what it was first. Twenty years later it was due for another lick of paint to freshen up, which Dulux happily provided.
Red Hut's vibrant red exterior was repainted using Dulux Weathershield in Dulux Pioneer Red colour, restoring the hut to its lively self. The interior was repainted using Dulux Wash&Wear in Dulux Off White colour.
DOC manages a network of over 950 huts of all shapes and sizes. They provide unique places to stay, refuge from bad weather, or rest and recover when you're out exploring the outdoors. Find out more about bookable huts.
